THING 23-COMPLETE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yaaaaaaay. I'm done! What a ride this has been. Great learning opportunity! I feel like I know a little about alot but know where to go to find out more. An organization I'm involved with has started a Web Blog and I volunteered to keep it up. This is through the University of Minnesota they use Moveable Type. I'm confident I will have no trouble figuring that out. I did most of the work at home but it was hard as high speed internet is not available deep in the woods where I live. It was hard to find the time to work on it at work. I did manage to watch the videos at work. Was a real problem for people without computers at home.
Also a winter session would be great as its hard to give up our summer time outside to work on this. Thanks so much for the chance to do this. I will sign up if you come up with more Things.

THING 22-complete

I looked through the Library web blogs. I set up a RSS feed on Dangeroulsy Irrelevant
on my Google reader. This one was on educational gaming and it gave me a new perspective on it. I hope to maintain my blog as I plan on going back to the things I was really interested in and learn more. If I don't use these things I will forget them. This was great fun!

THING 21-complete

I read the articles. Joined 23 Things on a stick Ning and left comments for another member . Uploaded a video to my blog and added a ning widget to my blog.
I looked at 43 things and good reads. Both were interesting but I don't believe I have the time to use a social network unless it is specifically for my job. It was interesting to see how many people are involved in them and all the different topics covered. The courses on Web Junction looked good. May try one of them at a future date.

23 things

Find more videos like this on 23 Things on a Stick

THING 19-complete

I looked at the directories and ended up on Podcast.com Listened to some of the mp3 podcasts on Memoirs for Schoo Library Media.I added a RSS feed to my Google reader. That is cool. It is on Morbidity and mortality wally report.Looked at "John supplies our worm bins". "Ha Ha Food and Drink vodcasts. and "diabetic feed". Alot of good podcasts and some awful ones. Took the tour on Gcast. That looks way too easy. Had a time getting this one done as High speed internet is not available where i live deep in the woods.

THING 20-complete

I registered on facebook and sent an invite to 3 friends. I got back 2 (both my nieces). I completed a profile and joined 23 things group. Posted one wall. I also visited MySpace to check kit out . Looked around and found a few people I knew. The library pages were interesting. I can see how the teens would be interested in using it. I cant imagine using these myself but I wanted to see what all the kids are doing. I also checked back on my facebook and had one message.

Thing 18-complete

I explored both YouTube and Google Video. I chose the video "Its a Library(joke)" to share on my blog because it was both funny and short. Its hard to see any lengthy ones with dial up.I got a chuckle out of alot of the videos which I watched at the library. This was a fun Thing.

THING 17-complete

I tried to set up an rss feed to my google reader with the new intructions but it kept coming back with a message try again in a few minutes. I do understand how to do it so I gave up after numerous trys. I set up a folder in Page composer. Made up a web page and added a url, picture and background with different colors. I created a web page in ProQuest Newsstand Complete followed thru and added publications and emailed them to myself. Saved it to my computer. NetLibrary was a challenge. I already have an account. I looked for the book "101 Ways to Promote your web site" and couldn't find it. After searching every way I could think of I viewed "Build a Data base the easy way" and put in "data base design" as the search term. Followed thru on the rest of instructions and have it in my "Favorites and notes.
Since I don't often do reference at our library I don't see myself using these often enough to get comfortable with. Ma by Net library If someone is looking for a particular book. This was very interesting and I can see it being a real help to doing a research project.

THING 16-complete

This thing was very interesting. Wish I had had some of these tools when I was in school doing research projects. The assignment calculator would be great for keeping on task. Email alerts of where you should be on the project are a great idea. The Research Project has a ton of information and helps for a project. The downloads of forms would also be a great help. I liked the Digital Presentation Story book and the video presentations. Lucky for me I should never have to do another research project but it would be great to be able to show this to someone having trouble getting thru an assignment.

THING 15-complete

This was wierd. I took the tour and snooped around Second Life. I went and looked at and read the resources to try and get this. I can see it as a way for people to express themselves and be creative. I didnt sign up and go into see the classes offered by the colleges so Im not sure if they would be valuable or not. Guess my age is showing. Would rather see the kids out doing something physical than spending time on a computer living a virtual life. Maby this is why were all so overweight. Maby I just dont get it.

THING 14-complete

I took the tour, set up account, added books to my library. I added library thing widget to this blog. Takes you right to the book. I like this thing. Not sure how I will use it but it is definitely one I will be going back to and using when I'm done with the 23 things. I would have liked to have it when a patron asked me about a certain series and knew story line but I couldn't remember the author. Had to wait to go home to look in my list of books I read. Could have looked at this on line at work.

Library thing

THING 13-complete

I made up a page on igoogle and added features. Wasn't sure what the advantage would be to change my home page to this until I looked at my MSN home page and realized I use only a fraction of whats on it. I may change to this. will have to see what all i can put on it. I already use the MSN calendar and like it except for the fact i cant share it with my sister who doesn't have MSN. I print it then scan it and email to her. I tried the Google calendar and think i may use it. Sent to my sister to see if it is easier for her. The lists don't seem like something I would use much. I am not at my computer enough to make them worthwhile. I checked out the Backpack features and it looks great for a busy person. My life just isn't that complicated but seems like it would be good for a business to use.

THING 12-complete

I looked at all the sites and took the tours. I read several stories on the newspapers and tried to submitt them but they were already submitted. I think i understand how its done tho. I did try to set up and account with Newsvine but the email would not come thru on my computer and I gave up as im sure i will never use this. I dont see how this would be helpfull to me personally as I dont have the time to sit and look at the articles. Couldnt get the button to appear on my MSN Explorer either. Didnt care for this Thing at all.

THING 11-complete

I tagged some of my blogs and reposted. I reviewed the Minn23 account and set up and RSS feed to keep up to date on it. I use MSN Explorer at home and couldnt get the buttons to work. Think I will have to research that further as it seems to be and easy way to add bookmarks. I created a Del.icio.us account and added a few sites to it. Looked at some of the other bookmarks by other people. I think I can use this as I get asked gardening questions away from home where I have all my favorite sites bookmarked and Im lost. Think I will use this one alot after I get my favorite bookmarks in it. After looking at the other librarys that use del.icio.us I can see where this would be helplful to the reference desk and especially to the rest of us who get an occasional reference question and have to search for a site to look it up as the patron is standing their waiting.

THING 10-complete

Wikis are a great idea. I especially liked the idea of using it to support an event or conference and have local people input their tips and ideas. I also liked the book reivew concept. I edited the 23 thngs on a stick wiki. It was easy. I uploaded a picture to put on it and that was also easy but decided not to add it. I watched the video and checked out the resources. They had good explanations of wikis in them. The only question I have in my mind is how do you find them?
I dont believe Wikipedia is a good source for student research unless the information is verified from another valid source. Might be a good starting point.

THING 8- complete

I was finally able to look at Databases. and check out the efolio Minnesota. Not sure what I would do with a database but it seems like a good idea. I may need it to keep track of all the URLs im collecting from this class. The efolio would be great for people looking for jobs. Great way to present yourself. I would definitely recommend it.

THING 7- complete

I tried again to get into a web conferencing progam with no luck. It was on webinar. I looked 1/2 hour before it was to start and it had dissapeared from the schedule. Anyway, I looked at an archived program on Google custoized search engine so I could get an idea of how they work. This one was a real frustration to me as I couldnt seem to easily hook up with a web conference.

THING 9-Complete

I read everything and listened to video on Google Docs and Zoho Writer. I did sign up for a Google account. I didn't edit the Declaration of Independence as it felt wrong and disrespectful even for an exercise. I did however upload several documents and make changes on them. One was my family tree. This could be useful to get information from relatives to complete. I also tried uploading my monthly calendar from msn to keep up whats going on with my sister but that didn't work. Think I will work on that. I found the templates to make up documents and can see how they would be helpful. Still not sure how much secure or personal information I would want to be online. Editing etc is so much like the Microsoft office programs it was easy.

THING 8-not done yet

So far I have made up a slide show presentation on Thumbstacks. This was easy, alot like power point. Hardest part was figuring out how to post to blog. Wasnt sure if i should add the link or the slide show itself goes on the blog. Decided must be the link. Directions for this weren't clear to me.
I made up a cube and spirial on Picture Trail. Couldnt upload the picts on home computer as i have dial up so had to put on flash drive and take to library. Then was quick and easy. I think this part is my favorite so far. Enjoy working with pictures.
Cannot open Lazy base on either home or library computer.
Will add more later as i go thru this thing.

THING 7- Not done yet

This one has really had me going!
Email: I use email daily. Not so much in my job but with other organizations I am involved with. Great way to get information out to alot of people in a hurry. The productivity hints were good. My supervisors send out the work schedule and staff notes via email. This is helpful to me as I work part time and miss alot of the information.
Instant Messaging: Viewed all the info required. I have an accout set up thru MSN and IM my niece alot. I did get a copy of an acronym dictionay printed so I know what she is talking about better. Im still in the process of IMing another person at work. Will add to that later as i get it done.
Text messaging: I have no way to try this so will have to get a friend that has it to let me practice. Used a friends cell phone to send TMs. Would have to practice alot more to get good at it.

Web Conferencing. What a great concept. Sounds like a real money and time saver. I viewed all information requested. Tried to join in a program scheduled. What a frustration. Got all the way in and nothing happened. Thought i would be able to see someone talking or something. Showed two other participants and me logged in but no moderator???? Will try again when another is scheduled.
Im not done with this one yet but will go on to others and add comments on this as I finish.

THING 6-complete

Ive made the trading card, downloaded to my computer and uploaded to Flickr then to this blog.
I previously tried the licence plate and Flower message. Image Chef was the easiest to work with. Not sure what I would do with these projects. This was fun to learn and see how many projects one can make.

THING 5-complete

Ive tried several of the projects. I think they are fun but Im not real sure how useful they are to the library. I believe you have to order them from Flickr or the other locations if you want them printed out. These would be ok if we could print out on the computer to use, not just on line. Maby I am missing something and you can. Im done with thing 5

THING 4-complete

I chose option 2 and created an account in Flickr. I took pictures at the library and uploaded 2. to Flickr and then to my blog. I had quite a time with this finding the url for the pictures but finally figured it out. I can see myself using this to share pictures with my family. No ideas for use at the library other than helping patrons that are trying to use it. I am finished with Thing 4

THING 3-complete

I have set up my google reader and added the other participants in my area to keep up with what they are saying.
I also signed up for 2 readers clubs. Meet the Author and one where reviews are available on new books. This should be a fun way to review books and know a little about alot of authors.
I have 2 weather feeds coming also. Have been looking for RSS feeds on my regular sites but havent found any. Will keep looking. I tried a few of the bundled feeds but that was way too much information.
I also tried to add the shortcut to add subscriptions but didnt work for me. Went back and copy and pasted into the reader.
The video was good. Wasnt sure if I should just watch the first one or go on with the rest. They were all interesting.
I will call this Thing 3 done. I think i will continue to use it especially thru this class and will keep looking for feeds on my regular sites.

THING 2-complete

I've read everything and listened to the video. I am finished with Thing 2
This is much more time consuming than I originally thought. I work on most of it at home but have to find the time at work to view the videos as I only have dial up service at home which seems to be much too slow. Most of the Things I have only heard the name of and am anxious to find out what they really are. My younger relatives are way ahead of me on most of this. I need to catch up so I can communicate with them.
The internet is an unbelievable information resource.
I belong to a service group and look up educational based information daily. Our group is starting a web page and I will be in charge of keeping it up. This came at a perfect time for me to learn what is available.

THING 1- complete

I believe I have completed thing 1. I have my blog set up and avatar on it. Tried to set up a counter but was rather confusing so figured I may learn this in the future things. Went to Google to set up but couldnt find the location I was to paste the code to. Will keep trying on that issue.
Blog was easy to set up as long as I followed the directions given. I did print them out so I could go back and refer to them as needed. Avatars are fun and will be easy to change.
Thanks for this opportunity to learn. I am excited to get going.

Inital attempt

This is my first attempt at blogging. It's great so far. How bout that Avatar!
